Election Reflection

Obama vs. McCain:

Q: Are you satisfied with the election results? Why or why not?
A: Yes, I am satisfied with the election results because I think Obama's ideas/plans for America are best. He had options on health plan for Americans. Not just one health plan to go by. He had order in what he was going to do, and he was specific with his ideas. I think Obama deserved his new position.

Q: After seeing the election (11/4/08), would you still keep or get rid of the electoral college system?
A: Yes, I would keep it because it gives the more educated people in America more say in our new presidential leader. I also agree with the electoral college. I think 270 is a fair number to get to. The electoral college has been working for over 200 years. If a system can last that long then, it is a very good one that we should keep.

Q: After looking at your map, how close were you in your prediction on MONDAY? What changed? What actually happened?
A: I was pretty close to matching my map with the actual one. I was only two states off from getting the map correct (not counting MO and NC...they're still being decided). The ones that I were off on were CO and IN. I put CO down as Republican but, the state was actually Democrat. I put IN down was Republican, but it was actually Democrat. Close, but no cigar.

Q: Did your Gallup poll research influence your prediction? If so how?
A: Yes, my Gallup poll influenced my predictions. In the age Gallup poll, it showed that most of the people would prefer Obama for their president. In the gender Gallup poll, the female population would prefer Barack Obama. Later on in that poll, the male population decided that Barack would be better, also. So this shows that the people wanted Barack as their new president, and the people got it.

Review of John McCain's Website:

When you first get to Senator McCain's website, you see an ad about why you should vote for McCain and his view on the issues. Then, you can scroll down to click on the button that continues to McCain's website. On the top of his website, you see 10 different buttons that you can click on that take you to where you want to go. You also see there is a video that you can watch. Beneath that video there are 3 buttons that you can click on that says: Watch Videos from Joe, The McCain plan for tax relief, and Create Your Rally Sign. These are on the page so you can tell the country that you support McCain. On the left side of that video, there are images that you can click on that will also help support McCain in the upcoming election. When you scroll down on that page, there is a section that has: "In the News"-It shows you headlines about McCain, "Upcoming Events"-It shows you where McCain will be, and "Photos of The Week" that shows you pictures from his recent rallies. This website is clear to read and an easy place to get informed about McCain's view on the issues and other subjects that impact our daily lives.

Barack Obama: Need Education

This video shows a woman that has a job working in a power plant. She worked the same job as men in the power company for 20 years before she discovered she was paid 40% less. It showed that McCain had opposed a law for woman to get equal pay for work. McCain dismissed the wage gap by saying "Woman just need education and training." But, the truth is women aren't working for kicks and giggles. Women should earn just as much money as men earn to survive. At the end of the video, the woman says that regarding the economy, John McCain is the one that needs the education. She and Obama in the ad are saying that Obama knows what the economy needs. The economy needs women to be treated just as equal as men. This video was paid for by Obama for America and approved by Barack Obama.

McCain or Obama?

This link above will take you to an updated Gallup poll from Gallup.com. This poll is based on gender. From what you can see, the female population would prefer Barack Obama for their president during the whole time period (June 9th to October 19th). There was at least a 9% difference the whole time amongst the woman votes in the poll. The whole male population, until October 5th, preferred John McCain. But, from October 6th to 19th, the male population that voted for McCain (John McCain was winning at the time) changed. McCain was now falling behind Barack Obama in poll votes. If McCain wants to win over the male population, he had better convince them that he would be a better president than Obama.

It shows Joe Biden talking. What he says is "Mark my words, it will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama. I guarantee you, it will happen". When that is being said, the music is dreary and sounds like something that should be in a horror movie. Then, John McCain comes onto the TV ad and tells you it doesn't have to happen and by that he means: you should vote for him. This ad was approved by John McCain and paid for by The Republic National Committee(http://www.gop.org/) and authorized by McCain-Palin 2008.

Barack Obama's Website Review:

When you first see Senator Obama's website, you see a screen with some of the issues on it. When you look above that you see a bar that has a home, learn, issues, media, action, people, states, blog and store button that will take you to whatever you're interested in. There's also a part of the website that encourages you to become a member to Obama's website. Not only that, there is a section on the right side that says "Five Things You Can Do" that includes volunteering, knocking on doors, make calls, find events, and log in to My BO. All these things are here so people can support Obama. When you scroll down on the page, you see Obama's Blog and other political related subjects. All the information is a convenient way for people to be informed about the election as well as Obama's positions.

This link will take you to an updated GALLUP POLL showing who people (depending on age) will vote for (Barack Obama or John McCain). This shows that people 65+ agree with Senator McCain until about the beginning of October. In October most of the people would rather have Senator Obama as their president.

This cartoon is very funny. It shows how worked-up McCain gets when he loses a debate to Obama. And the people are confused because at the end of debates, they don't immediately tell you who won. But, looking at this picture, Obama looks pretty happy (hint hint) and McCain looks pretty angry about the debate.

The Issue: Enviroment and Energy

John McCain:

Oil is a big problem, and most of the people in America get their energy from it. Unfortunately, American has to pay the high price for oil from foreign country's. Some of them, aren't nice. But, McCain has an idea to solve this. Nuclear power is big part of his vision. He wants 45 new nuclear power plants. He also promises a $300 million prize to the scientist that can make a long-lasting electric car battery. McCain also says to drill for oil off America's coasts immediately, which is now prohibited. He thinks that this will solve the problem.

Barack Obama:

Obama does not agree with McCain's idea to drill for oil. He thinks that drilling will not solve the major issue. He has a different idea. Obama proposes investing $150 billion in a "major commitment" to develop wind power and other "clean energy." Obama has compared his goal to make the U.S. the world leader in environmental technology to the U.S. space program in the '60s. By this, Obama thinks that his plan will be best for all Americans.

The Issue: Economy

John McCain:

America is facing a devastating problem. The economy is dropping and people are losing their jobs and homes. Most people are in debt. So, what's John McCain's idea to fix this mess? What he proposes to do is to make Bush's two tax cuts permanent and to reduce government spending, which he says is wasteful. By doing this he thinks that the economy will be back on track.

Barack Obama:

What Obama plans to do is to cut back Bush's tax cuts on the wealthiest Americans. Depending on the state of the economy, Senator Obama would raise taxes on families making more than $250,000 and on large companies,too. By this, almost all other Americans would pay less in their taxes. But, not only that, Obama promises to make jobs in part by investing in highways, schools, public transportation, and other elements of the country that experts say are in danger.

The Issue: Healthcare

John McCain:

Health insurance is expensive and over 40 million people in the US don't have it. That is a very bad thing for Americans. Instead of having heath insurance given by their employers he would rely on giving tax credits to individual people and families to buy coverage of their choice from health insurance companies. Also, McCain says that they can buy health insurance from companies in different states. By this, he thinks it will help the economy, too.

Barack Obama:

Obama has many different ideas about health insurance plans. People with employer based tax credits can keep them. Small business owners would get tax credits to help them manage coverage for their employee's. Barack supports affordable health plans given by the government, too. All parents would have to maintain a health plan for their children.

The Issue: Iraq

John McCain:

As many of you know, most of the US troops are in a foreign country, Iraq. They have been there for a very long time but, is it safe? John McCain supports our US troops over seas in Iraq. "Iraq war can be won and most troops out by 2013", says McCain. Not only does he think that the troops are doing well but he also thinks that their newest tactics are succeeding. John thinks that withdrawing the troops could do great damage to the Iraqi government.

Barack Obama:

Senator Obama disagrees with what John McCain said. Unlike McCain, Obama thinks that we should remove the US troops from Iraq. "I would withdraw the US troops within 16 months of taking office in January 2009 and would leave no permanent bases." Obama says that the troops in Iraq could "distract" America from other problems. Not only that, he thinks that withdrawing our troops would make our country safer and more alert about other problems.

Hey, I'm Elaine and I am creating a blog to follow the presidential election of 2008. This is a social studies class assignment that I'm being graded on. I will be focusing on the main issues as well as the election process. I will be updating this website two times per week. The days that I update my blog are Monday and Thursday until America's presidential election is over.
